Do not immediately cut, drill or inject the deck. That can trap moisture, damage the substrate and make a later repair more difficult.

1. Limit loading and mark the area

Avoid heavy traffic or load on a raised edge or blister. Mark the outline with removable tape and note the date and temperature to show whether it changes.

Cover a sharp or loose edge only temporarily and without trapping water. Avoid aggressive tape or sealant that may damage the surface or hide the condition.

2. Map visible and audible signs

Look for raised edges, ripples, local discolouration, open joints and movement under gentle hand pressure. A difference in sound from light tapping can indicate a loose area, but does not determine its depth or cause.

Take overview photographs with a recognisable reference and details around every edge. Record whether it appears only when hot in the sun or remains when cool and dry.

3. Look for a possible moisture source

Water may enter through an open edge, joint, fitting or damage. It may also come from a damp substrate or a leak around a penetration. A wet area does not prove that adhesive failure came first.

Visually inspect drainage and adjacent fittings. Do not remove fittings or open the area without a plan to keep the substrate dry and protected.

4. Consider substrate and preparation

Adhesion depends on the material combination, cleanliness, flatness, preparation, adhesive layer and curing. Old coatings, contamination or substrate movement can cause local or more extensive lifting.

If several areas show the same pattern, bonding down one edge may be insufficient. The surrounding deck condition determines the necessary repair extent.

5. Record heat, distortion and use

Dark deck surfaces can become very hot in sunlight. Surface, adhesive and substrate may expand differently. Trapped air or moisture and restricted edges can increase distortion.

Record sun exposure, covers, recent heat and whether the area changes after cooling. This helps distinguish thermal movement from permanent loss of adhesion.

6. Establish the extent and repair route

A small dry accessible edge needs a different approach from a large blister over a damp or damaged substrate. A local repair may be possible, or more material may need lifting to remove the cause.
