Do not begin with the strongest product. First distinguish surface dirt, weathered gelcoat and damage in or below the coating. This avoids unnecessary material removal.

1. Clean a small test area first

Wash a defined area with a suitable mild cleaner and fresh water. Salt, atmospheric dirt, old wax and mineral deposits can distort colour and gloss. Work out of direct sun and let the area dry fully before judging it.

If the original gloss returns, contamination was probably the main issue. If a matt, chalky layer remains, the surface gelcoat may be oxidised.

2. Recognise surface oxidation

Oxidation often appears as dullness, fading and powder transferred to a cloth. Severity can vary by side because of sun, covers and the waterline. A uniform haze is different from isolated defects or visible texture.

Take photographs in even daylight and record which areas receive the most exposure. A wet surface looks temporarily glossier and can hide the condition.

3. Decide whether polishing is appropriate

Polishing removes a very small amount of weathered surface. Compound, pad, speed, pressure and temperature must match the condition and material. Aggressive work can cut through edges, create heat or leave an uneven finish.

A test patch shows the level of correction required. Stop if colour, texture or the underlying layer changes; further removal is then unsafe.

4. Separate oxidation from actual damage

Star cracks, crazing, deep scratches, blisters, open pores or exposed reinforcement are not ordinary polishing issues. Their depth and cause need to be established first.

Local discolouration can also indicate an old repair, moisture or a material difference. More polishing will not remove the underlying cause.

5. Protect the result after correction

After suitable cleaning or correction, an appropriate protective product can limit dirt adhesion and further weathering. Follow its instructions for preparation, temperature, curing and maintenance.

Protection does not restore thin or damaged gelcoat. Plan gentle routine cleaning and remove local dirt before harsher treatment appears necessary.

6. Choose between maintenance and repair

Light contamination may need only cleaning; sound but oxidised gelcoat may suit controlled polishing. Thin, cracked, blistered or missing gelcoat points towards a repair assessment.
