Vibration can be amplified through the hull and interior, so the place where it is felt is not necessarily the source. Start with urgency and pattern before inspecting visible parts.

1. Decide whether to stop immediately

Stop or reduce load if vibration began suddenly after an impact or grounding, worsens rapidly, comes with loud noise, or steering or drive response has changed. Find a safe berth and avoid further loading.

Severe imbalance can damage mounts, seals, bearings and the driveline. Never inspect a rotating propeller or shaft.

2. Relate the vibration to rpm and speed

Record whether it follows engine rpm, occurs only at a particular boat speed or changes in turns. Note whether it is present in neutral. This helps separate engine behaviour, driveline rotation and water flow.

Test only briefly and in safe conditions. Do not force the engine through a severe vibration merely to reproduce it.

3. Consider debris or propeller damage

Rope, weed, a damaged blade or fouling can cause imbalance. Even small deformation may become noticeable at higher rotational speed. An impact may also affect the shaft, lower unit or mountings.

Inspect only when the engine cannot start and the system is safe. Underwater work, sharp edges and tension in rope create additional hazards.

4. Have the shaft, coupling and alignment assessed

On a shaft-driven boat, bearing or seal wear, a bent shaft, loose coupling or incorrect alignment can cause vibration. The pattern may change with load or temperature.

Alignment is not an isolated adjustment: hull loading, engine mounts and fastener condition matter. Do not alter parts without an appropriate measuring method.

5. Do not exclude engine behaviour and mounts

Uneven combustion, a cylinder problem or a fuel or ignition fault may be felt as vibration. Worn or loose engine mounts can transmit otherwise normal movement more strongly into the hull.

Record starting behaviour, smoke, smell, rpm variation and warning lamps. An engine-running fault requires a different diagnosis from propeller damage.

6. Collect useful evidence

Write down when it began, whether there was an impact or rope round the propeller, the affected rpm range and any loss of speed. A short video from a safe distance may capture sound and movement.

Frequently asked questions

Can propeller fouling cause vibration?

Yes. Uneven fouling or debris can create imbalance, but damage, rope and faults elsewhere in the driveline should also be excluded.

Why does the boat vibrate only at one rpm?

Resonance may be strongest in a particular range. That does not identify the source by itself; propeller, shaft, engine behaviour and mounts may all contribute.

Can I continue after the propeller strikes something?

If there is new vibration, noise, leakage or altered steering, stop and inspect. Minor visible damage does not rule out consequential damage.
