Boat battery drains or will not charge: possible causes
A flat boat battery does not automatically mean that the battery itself has failed. A load may remain active, a connection may be poor, or the charger or charging source may not suit the system. The pattern of use often provides the first clue.

1. Check for immediate hazards

2. Record when the battery becomes flat
Does it fail overnight, after several idle days, while under way or only after a heavy load? Record which battery switches, pumps, refrigeration, audio, lights and chargers were active. A timeline helps separate a parasitic load from inadequate charging.
Automatic equipment such as a bilge pump or alarm may intentionally bypass the main switch. Do not disable safety equipment to reduce consumption without understanding the consequences.
3. Inspect terminals, cables and battery switches
Check safely accessible parts for looseness, corrosion, damage and discolouration. A poor connection can lose voltage and heat up, making both starting and charging unreliable.
Do not clean or disconnect anything without the correct sequence and protection. With multiple battery banks or a selector switch, the wrong setting can also explain why the wrong battery is used or charged.
4. Check the charging source and settings
See whether shore power and the charger show normal operation, and inspect plugs, protection and ventilation for visible problems. Do not use a lead or connection that is hot, damaged or wet.
An alternator or other source may charge while the engine runs, but expected readings vary by system and charging stage. One reading is not a diagnosis; compare it with the manual or arrange testing under load.
5. Consider capacity and age
A battery can show a plausible resting voltage yet collapse under starter or domestic load. Temperature, repeated deep discharge, unsuitable charging settings and normal ageing all reduce usable capacity.
Do not replace it without checking both charging and consumption. A new battery can go flat again if the original cause remains in the installation.
6. Prepare for targeted diagnosis
Record battery type, capacity, approximate age, charging equipment, time in use and exactly when the problem occurs. Photos of labels, connections and switch positions help when nothing needs to be disconnected.
